Our Halloween

Well I'm a little sad that Halloween is over for another year. I do enjoy the festivities, and we have had a bit of fun messing about and dressing up.

This year we learned from our past mistakes and actually ordered costumes in advance. There were no bin bag capes in sight this year!

The kids have been off school for half term break, but only from Wednesday onwards, so it has felt like an extra long weekend. We spent Thursday testing our new snazaroo face painting kit which I had bought to do our spooky make-up. I had a little play about with it, doing a practice run of Caitlin's zombie face. I also tried out a sugar skull on myself, despite it having nothing to do with my actual costume.

I kept the face paint on all day, even making a dash to the village shop for groceries in the evening. I got some strange looks from other shoppers, but that could also have been because I was wearing my pyjamas too!

We did some pumpkin carving on Thursday evening. Well, I say we... my husband did most of the work. My children picked out the designs, and then did a runner. We couldn't find our pumpkin scooping thing so had to use kitchen spoons and I'm pretty rubbish at the whole thing. My hubby had his ready to light and I was still trying to scoop the stringy stuff out of the middle of mine.

I was supposed to be doing the Jack Skellington one, but I was put off by the intricate mouth, so took charge of the Creeper pumpkin instead, which was pretty easy to do as it was all straight lines.

I think the pumpkins looked great in the window. The haunted house was my favourite, very effective looking. Most of the trick or treaters we had round seemed to favour the creeper, as I heard many children shouting 'ooh look, a minecraft pumpkin!'

On Friday I was at work all day, so had to hurry home at 5 to get ready for some spooky festivities. A lot of people in our village go all out for Halloween, and trick or treating is quite a big thing here. The local town holds a big hallowtides festival every year, usually on the Saturday after Halloween. This year they decided to hold it on the Friday because it was Halloween, which meant a lot of the local families would be heading out early to catch the fireworks and parade. We usually go out at about 6 but because everyone would be away to the fireworks we had to rush out at 5.30.... difficult considering I didn't finish work until 5!

I had planned on using latex to create some pretty nasty looking face wounds but just didn't have the time, so just went for a zip on the face look. In hindsight I probably shouldn't have gone for such a gory costume, because Neil didn't like it and refused to take part in anything with me.

I must admit, I did look pretty scary!

My hubby had done Caitlin's make-up before I got home and she looked even better than when I had done it. Damn my hubby and his being good at everything, putting me to shame!

She did look fantastic though, and all of the neighbours loved her costume. We went out trick or treating in the rain (typical!) for half an hour before heading home. To finish off the night we headed up to the highest point in the village to get a view of the fireworks in the neighbouring town.

Surprisingly the kids paced themselves with their sweeties and we didn't have any sugar rush episodes, thank goodness! Although I did find Caitlin had hidden some sweets upstairs and was lying in her bed stuffing her face. She only got caught because she asked me to help her wash her sticky hands!

We have had a wonderful Halloween weekend. What have you been up to over the weekend? Did you enjoy the Halloween festivities?
