My 10,000 step challenge

Yesterday I set myself a challenge to do 10,000 steps today.

I woke up this morning feeling like absolute garbage. I didn't get much sleep and must have been lying funny because my back was killing me, so I have to say I wasn't feeling very optimistic about the challenge! I didn't want to let myself down though, I really don't like taking on a challenge and then quitting, so I powered on. I put on my pedometer as soon as I got out of bed, and it's been around my neck all day.

Today was a busier day than usual. It was my day off work, which usually means lazing around the house in my jarmies like a slob ( yes, I often take my kids to the school bus with a coat over my pj top and a pair of joggers pulled over the bottom!). There was none of that today though, as Neil had an appointment with the occupational therapist at 9.30.

Once we'd finished at the appointment I had to quickly pop in to the shops before taking Neil to school. I then pottered around the house for a couple of hours doing housework and other boring things before getting the kids off the school bus. I felt like I had walked a half marathon at that point, and was very surprised to find I had only done 3000 and something. What?!

It was apparent more walking was needed if I was going to reach my goal, so I took Caitlin out for a walk around the village. We were out for about an hour before returning for dinner. When we returned I found that I had only done 6000 steps, and I was beginning to think my pedometer was either broke, or lying to me.10,000 steps was turning out to be more of a task that I had first thought!

After putting the kids to bed I had to go out for another walk, because I wasn't about to fail my challenge! I went for a moonlit walk along the quay area of the village. I say moonlit, it was actually pitch black for part of it because some of the street lights were not working. There was an incident where a leaf blew past me and I genuinely thought it was a mouse, so I screamed loud enough to wake the whole village before feeling pretty foolish. I picked up the pace after that to flee the scene of the crime quickly...

I was out for about 30 minutes when the pedometer showed me the number I had been waiting for all day, 10000!

I'm so pleased I managed to do it, I really didn't want to make a fool of myself. I feel good now, kind of energised and ready to go, which is a bit mad because it's midnight! It wasn't too hard, I think on my days off from work I could go out for a nice long walk in the morning to wake myself up and manage it quite well. It has opened my eyes a bit though, because on a normal working day I think I probably only take about a quarter of those steps, which probably isn't great!

I have enjoyed my wee challenge, and I'm going to try and continue to walk as much as I can throughout the day. I might start leaving for work 15 minutes early and walk the long way to see what kind of difference it makes.

I have been vlogging my day if you would like to have a wee look and see how I got on...

Have you every counted your steps to see how much you walk on an average day?

  10. Well done! Great vlog too. I have to say that I was using a Fitbug last year and I had to walk up and down the stairs to make the target in the end! Keep up the targets. Thank you for linking to #PoCoLo x

  11. Well done :) I bet I don't do anywhere near 10,000 steps anymore. I used to be on my feet all day but not so much now I'm at home all day. My January goal is to walk for an hour a day though.
