Word of the Week - Apprehension

We have had a bit of a tough week with the wee man this week. The poor mite has a lot going on and it's really getting to him, so my word this week is...

On Saturday it will be Neil's 6th birthday. He is having his first proper party on Saturday morning. Before now we've always just had quiet family get togethers for birthdays, but this year Neil wanted a party. We attended a party for someone in his class earlier in the school year, and when he got home his little heart was set on throwing his own party, and how could you say no? He even offered to use the money out of his piggy bank to pay for it if we couldn't, which both melted and broke my heart at the same time. Such a sweet idea, but I really don't want him to be worrying about money at his age!

Neil's ASD means he usually doesn't enjoy social situations so much, so we were a little bit worried about booking a party and inviting his whole class. At the same time, I thought it was a good thing that he was showing an interest in actually inviting people. He was very excited to take his little Minecraft invitations in to school a few weeks ago!

This week though, things have just gone downhill a bit. The whole thing seems to be too much for him and he's just not taking it too well. Children with ASD tend to like to know what is happening and when, and Neil is usually no different. I have been trying to talk about it, just throwing it in to conversation so he is prepared for it coming, but every time I mention it he gets all nervous and hits himself in the head. He hasn't been sleeping very well either, worse than usual in fact, and most nights he has ended up in our bed at some point.

A couple of weeks ago he seemed so excited but now he is so apprehensive and nervous about the whole thing, I'm starting to worry if we made the wrong decision.

I think hope he will be ok once he is at the party and he can throw all of his energy in to playing on the equipment and running around like a mad man, but until then the poor wee pet doesn't seem to know what to do with himself, and I don't really know what to do either!

  1. Oh bless him and you. There must be so many emotions running through his head right now. I hope he enjoys it once he's actually there.

  6. Apprehension is a very apt word; birthday parties are always a bit stressful leading up to them and that's without the worry of ASD too. I do hope that he managed to enjoy himself and the day, and the apprehension was short lived

  7. I wish I had something useful to say other than you haven't made the wrong decision because it sounds like he really wanted a party, and you're being lovely and reassuring so fingers crossed he'll have a whale of a time :-)
