Getting back on the fitness wagon

The start of a new year often brings with it high hopes and aspirations for the months ahead. Resolutions are made, goals are set, and everyone generally has good intentions.

As cliche as it is, this whole new year new me thing is appealing, the chance to wipe the slate clean and start something fresh. Of course, you can do this at any point in the year, but the beginning of the year feels like a good time to start something new.

Becoming fit and leading a healthy lifestyle is often somewhere on most people's lists of things to do in the new year, and it's not hard to see why. With copious amounts of chocolate and booze consumed over the festive period, most of us are feeling a bit sluggish. Well, I know I am. I think I have eaten my body weight in sweets and chocolate, not to mention the huge platefuls of unhealthy dinners and take aways.

So as I pick through the remains of the roses and celebrations (who actually eats bounty, anyway?) my thoughts are turning to getting back on the fitness wagon.

I have a wedding to attend in March, and I bought a beautiful dress in the sales last summer. The dress is a size 10, and fit when I bought it, but it's a little tight around the tummy now. Before I continue, I must say that I haven't been a size 10 for a while, I certainly wasn't a 10 when I bought the dress, but it fit when I bought it and it doesn't now. I'm aiming to have the dress fitting again in time for the wedding, because it's a lovely dress and I don't want to have to buy a new one!

This isn't just about losing weight, it's about getting fit and healthy, because I can be a bit of a slob sometimes and I want to change that.

I bought myself weights and resistance bands last year but didn't do much with them, so I might give them a go now. I'm also going to start running again, because I did some running during the summer and really enjoyed it. I stopped because I was having a lot of chest pain, and I went to see the doctor who said I may have exercise induced asthma. She prescribed me with an inhaler to use while running, but I just couldn't find the motivation after that as it was starting to get cold in the evenings. Now seems as good a time as any to start again, so I'm going to give it a go and see how I get on.

I know everyone says this, but I genuinely want to do this and stick at it this time.

If anyone wants to share their success stories or some tips and ideas I would love to hear about it!

Are you trying to get fit this new year?

  1. Good luck with your fitness mission. I started one in January of last year and have managed to lose two stone but I have been a bit lazy the last few weeks. I need to get back on it! ;)

    1. Thanks petal. It's quite easy to be lazy at Christmas time, I think we all deserve a wee break too. Your success has inspired me, the picture you posted on Twitter gave me a bit of a boost to get back on it x
